THE ZODIAC PART 1

This was supposed to be a brief description of the zodiac signs, but as the air-head (aquarius) that I am, I never manage to keep it short. I hope it’s valuable either way. In this blog post, the first six signs of the zodiac; aries, taurus, gemini, cancer, leo and virgo are described.

There are 12 zodiac signs in total, and each one belongs to one of the four elements; fire, earth, air, water. Aries, leo and sagittarius belongs to the element of fire. Fire represents energy, motivation, drive and passion. Taurus, virgo and capricorn belongs to the element of earth. Earth represents stability, practicality, structure, organization, reliability and a grounding energy. Gemini, libra and aquarius belongs to the element of air. Air is a symbol of communication, intelligence, thoughts, reflection and ideas. Cancer, scorpio and pisces belongs to the element of water, the element associated with feelings, creativity dreams, healing and intuition.

The zodiac sign, star sign and sun sign, are all descriptions of the same thing. We are here referring to the sign of our sun. My sun sign is aquarius as I’m born the 31st of January. Your sun sign represents the position of the sun when you were born. It’s an important position, but you would need to look at your whole birth chart to understand the totality. A birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is a snapshot of the sky at the moment of your birth. It reveals the precise location of each of the planets and which sign they occupied. Calculate yours here.

We don’t only want to know the position of our sun, which is the one placement that most people already know, but also the position of the rest of the planets. What sign is your moon in? What about your mercury, mars and venus? There are several planet placements as well as different positions, like the ascendant, descendant and midheaven, that when viewed together, represents different aspects of our life and personality. Our sun sign only gives us one piece of a big puzzle. Most people clearly identify with their sun sign, some don’t. The reason for this is usually due to the rest of their planet placements and positions. Even though people born within the same month, and the same zodiac sign, possesses many of the same qualities, they are obviously not all the same. This is where the rest of our birth chart comes in; your time and place of birth will give you your individual chart, unlike anyone else’s, and you’d need to look at the chart as a whole to better understand yourself.

Maybe you’d find it interesting to read about your friends, lover or family too, to better understand the people around you? If you know more of the signs that dominate your own birth chart, feel free to read all of them, but keep in mind that the signs will influence the different parts and aspects of your life that the specific planets represent. While the sun represents your ego and identity, the moon represents your emotions and inner world, and so the signs these planets fall in, will influence how you identify, and how you feel internally. The rising sign, also called ascendant, represents your soul, while mars speaks to your masculine qualities. Venus is the planet of love and relationships and its placement will show you what you are attracted to and what you value in a partner, and how you view, handle and navigate partnerships. Simply put, if you have venus in dreamy pisces, you’ll be attracted to deep feelings and connections, emotions and creativity, whereas a person with venus in gemini will be attracted by thoughts, words and intellectual stimulation. A person with venus in capricorn on the other hand, will find responsibility and the ability to provide and be self-sufficient attractive.

I am an aquarius sun, with an aquarius stellium, meaning three or more planets in the same sign or house. This means that I have a lot of aquarian energy in me, but I also have some strong water placements, both cancer, scorpio and pisces, as well as taurus, leo and sagittarius. The element of air is absolutely dominant in my birth chart, but I also have a fair share of water.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and represents beginnings. Aries natives are the first to start, and the first to finish, whatever they set out to do. This is the sign with the most power, intensity and stamina, and the one of the three fire signs (aries, leo, sagittarius) with the most fire. Ruled by mars, the planet of masculinity, aries is an active, bold, passionate, energetic, athletic, independent, unafraid, headstrong, impulsive, primal and sexual sign. The body comes first with aries, and their natural inclination is to use their bodies to get things done.

Innovation is a huge strength in aries people, and they always have multiple projects on their mind. Aries loves to start anything new, and they have trouble sitting still. Calmness is not a word in their vocabulary. They are pioneers in whatever they do, and there is a very basic quality of bravery in these people that is unmistakable. Aries generally knows what they want, and they know the quickest route to getting it. Aries enjoys a challenge, and they are happiest when their lives are moving forward and active. Competitive to the max, the best way to motivate an aries is to turn something into a contest. Aries will put everything they have into winning. They are magnetic, exciting and talkative, gravitating towards the center of action (and attention) with an intention on getting it their own way. Business women and business men, aries natives are born leaders. Their nature is to express power, and any obstacle or difference in opinion on their way, may be brushed away like it doesn’t matter. There's a childlike quality to aries people, and they are often quite charming. People are easily attracted to their confidence and charisma.

Aries is here to be very uninhibited and free in their expression. It often times seems that they lack a filter, and there isn’t much space between doing and thinking. Aries are very much in their primal instinct, and they are here to teach us how to connect us back to our primal self, and to act without overthinking everything. However, it’s important that these individuals develop a sense and consideration of others too, instead of just always focusing on themselves. Emotional intelligence, patience, sensitivity and compassion are qualities that shouldn’t be forgotten, but learned and practiced, as this doesn’t always come natural to an aries. When that’s said, the aries archetype, which truly embraces their uninhibited behavior and primal instincts, possesses important qualities that the rest of the zodiac can learn from.

In astrology we like to look at the polarity point in our birth chart; our opposite sign, to learn about our strengths and blind spots. The opposite sign of aries, is libra, and whereas libra always consider another, aries just want to consider themselves. It’s important to mention though, that if you are an aries in this lifetime, you are here to be a bit selfish. While pisces, the last sign of the zodiac are all about ‘us’, ‘we’, the collective and the merging of souls, aries, the first sign of the zodiac, is about me, myself and I, and represents the independent and the egoistic nature of a being.

Aries can have a hard time regulating their fire and energy in a healthy way. This can lead to a lot of burn-out because of their burning force that is going and going and going. Learning how to modulate and use their fire sustainably is a lifelong lesson for aries. The same goes for becoming aware of their damaging inner stress, which we all have, it’s just that some people are prone to rush to the next without even noticing or observing their inner state. Stress is stress, and so called ‘good’ stress, does harm your body too, if not addressed.

A taurus is a practical, patient, determined, responsible, dependable, organized and solid individual, with a soft, romantic dreamer inside. In taurus, the stability of an earth sign combines with the esthetic influence of venus to create a steady personality with deep appreciation for the finer aspects of life. Those born under this sign are often one of the most reliable and dependable signs of the zodiac. They value their sense of security and stability, and this is their role as the second sign of the zodiac. After aries brings its fiery energy, it is taurus that lays down the foundations. They will always search for stability in both their choices and the people they associate with.

Others are fascinated by their rare blending of a down to earth person who is such a romantic, poetic even. Smart, ambitious, and trustworthy, a taurus has an artistic vision and a strong love for beauty and arts. The ruler of taurus is venus, the planet of love, attraction, beauty, satisfaction, creativity and gratitude. This tender nature will make taurus an excellent cook, gardener, lover, and artist. They have an eye for details and aesthetics, great taste and a unique style, with the need to always be surrounded by beauty, luxury and comfort. Taurus is the sign of possessions and owning, and people born under this sign want to possess, collect and have. They are materialistic and will not easily let go of what belongs to them.

Anchored by the earth, this passionate sign is always seeking out pleasure. Taureans love feeling present in their body and frequently need to get in touch with their physical self. They always satisfy others -and know exactly how to satisfy themselves, too. Taureans are known for being sensual, seductive and affectionate, and has a big desire for indulging in the beauty of life. Taurus should be careful of overindulging (when very happy or upset) though, as this sign really likes their comfort foods, drink, cozy beds etc. Sleeping way too much? Watching way too much netflix? Eating way too much of the wrong foods?

Taurus makes amazing engineers and designers, and their determined spirit often make them successful. Just like the two other earth signs, virgo and capricorn, taurus has the ability to see things from a grounded, practical and realistic perspective. They find it easy to make money and stay on same projects for years, or until they are completed. What we often see as stubbornness can be interpreted as commitment. Their determination and their diligence mean that what they set out to do will be done well, as they don’t believe in leaving loose ends.

They have a reputation of being stubborn, however, they're not always stuck in their ways. Security is important for tarueans, and they can be resistant to change, and once they settle down with their routines, it can take a great effort to get them to change. They are not just stubborn, but also strong willed. Happiness and contentment for taurus, comes with stability, loyalty, trust and the familiar. Beneath the surface they are sensuous, sensitive and emotional and although they are willing to follow where their heart leads, they find it difficult to display their emotions openly. The taurus zodiac sign likes to take it slow in all areas of their life, and love is no different. They need to establish a strong foundation and feel secure and stable before making the decision to establish a relationship. They may take a while to commit to any serious relationship - but this also means that they will stick with a relationship and work hard to make it good. They often make loyal partners, reliable parents, and attentive lovers. Loyalty is something that is very important to taurus, and they will be fiercely loyal to friends and family, and usually expect the same from others.

The downside of this however, is that they can stay in relationships that they are no longer happy in for much longer than they should, thinking that they can make a hard situation work if only they put in the effort. Taurus, like in their relationships, can have a problem with staying in jobs that aren't working out for longer than they really should. This can be due to a sense of loyalty, or the fear of change. Usually, they are very hard workers, and the type of colleagues you can really count on. Being naturally patient people, it takes a lot to make a taurean angry, but when they are, be sure to stand back as far as you can. This zodiac sign is rather fierce and protective when they are pushed too far and too fast.

While taurus deals with matter, personal values, material goods, possessions, and security, its opposite sign, scorpio, rules shared possessions, transformation and the destruction of form. Taurus is a gentle, peace-loving and practical sign, which prefers to stay within its own sphere of comfort. However, if this axis becomes particularly polarised on the taurus end of the spectrum, then, the simple, biological drive towards stability can become stagnant and unhealthy. This can lead to an intense crisis (that are associated with the sign of scorpio) which breaks down fixed structures in the interest of growth and a new life. However, as a taurus you shouldn’t wait to let go, or wait to change, until you are forced to do so. The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining. A taurus can learn from scorpio by observing a scoprio’s lust for change and transformation, and to be conscious of not becoming a victim of their own routines, possessions and laziness.

Being an earth sign, having close access to nature is very important for taurus. Being lovers of nature and the earth, they don't like long periods spent stuck inside, or stuck in built up areas and cities.

Gemini is an air sign, referring to the activity of the mind, the intellectual function and the magic of communication and expression. Smart, witty and dynamic, gemini is characterized by the twins, and is known for having two different sides they can display to the world. They are quick in thought and action, with an urgent and continual need to communicate. Ruled by mercury, the planet of communication and thought processes, gemini lives primarily in the mind (over the heart) and makes great communicators as they are clever with words. They are associated with versatility and intellect and have a thousand thoughts in their head at any given time. They think fast, learn fast, and loses their concentration just as fast. A gemini’s quick mind can explain any action, defend any position and justify any course. Gemini love intellectual talk, but they also love gossip. As for constant mental stimulation, they pick up information here, gossip there, and have thoughts everywhere. They want to know everything, about everyone, but in their defense, it's not gossiping- it's gathering information. Despite their rep for being two-faced, once a gemini is by your side, they're loyal for life.

Natives of gemini strive for self-expression and are eager to learn and develop. They have great ability to synthetize new information. As an air sign they have such an easily changeable personality, that easily adapts. Their adaptability will sometimes mean that they themselves have a hard time pinning down who they really are. Their gift though, lies in dealing with people, and they are great at blending into different groups based on the vibe and energy they perceive.

Variety is their game and they like constant change of scenery. As a result, they may leave many unfinished tasks behind. With their curious nature, they research and investigate everything, but often don’t mind to scratch more than the surface of that given subject. This is partly due to them becoming bored and wanting to jump to the next thing that comes to mind, instead of exploring things in depth. Their sometimes shallow knowledge of subjects can make them seem superficial. This combined with their inconsistency often means that they end up juggling too many things at once. While they are great at starting projects, learn quickly, and are full of new ideas, they often don’t have the discipline to follow through with something.

Gemini love to travel as this allows them to meet people from new walks of life, take part in new experiences, and indulge their naturally curious natures. They are eager to explore and are like the other air signs (libra and aquarius) especially open to a different way of looking at things. Others are fascinated by their energy and enthusiasm.

Gemini value their freedom and are not always easy to pin down. They can struggle with great commitment phobia, but once they settle down, they make great partners. Attracted to thoughts, words and intellectual stimulation, gemini are expressive lovers, with a great strength in communicating. They push their partners to be the best that they can be, encouraging them to think outside the box and inspiring them to be more creative with their lives. A gemini would need a lot of activity and intellectual stimulation though, to stay interested in a relationship.

Gemini like time by themselves to read, create, daydream, and come up with other ways of sharing their gifts with the world. When a gemini can truly tap in and share their gifts, they're an unstoppable force of energy that can motivate, inspire and enchant others. They never get stuck in the past and doesn't ruminate on what might have been. Instead, they move forward with glass-half-full optimism and an ability to always look on the bright side, with a mind that's constantly racing, even when they're just quietly hanging out.

The opposite sign of gemini, is sagittarius. Two signs that’s both in search for truth and information. Whereas gemini is less attached to information, and quicker to rearrange the parts, with the influx of the new, sagittarius can be overly dogmatic and stuck in their own perceived truths. In contrast, gemini keeps a loose hold, taking what it likes and leaving the rest. However, the ultimate challenge for gemini is to find some kind of channel or purpose, for all that information, to be put into something. It doesn’t help to be an writer who spends years doing research, if they never settles down and brings everything together into form. The poles of the gemini-sagittarius axis complete and complement each other. If the gemini end loses touch with the bigger picture thinker of sagittarius, all the gathered information becomes meaningless. If, on the other hand, sagittarius loses touch with gemini, it can lead to arrogance and fundamentalism and attachment to truths.

Cancer is the healer of the zodiac. Emotional, intuitive a little moody, and practically psychic; ruled by the moon, cancer has so much going on in its watery depths. Cancer’s symbol, the crab, has a hard outer shell that protects the soft underneath. There is a reserve about them that is sometimes difficult to penetrate, but underneath is a warm, affectionate, loving and giving nature.

Most cancer’s have been called psychic at some point, and with good reason. Cancer can often intuitively see and understand relationships, ideas, and motivations before anyone has actually spoken. They feel and see everything, and as well as possessing a strong intuition they have intense powers of observation and awareness. This can make for challenging interactions with this sign, as they see right through you (and your bullshit). Cancer’s are usually emotionally intelligent with a great emotional depth. They are extraordinarily in sync with other people’s feelings, they spot the tiniest nuances of behavior, like a shift in mood and are very sensitive to emotional signals - to the point to where they know what you need, before you even know it yourself. This ability makes others drawn towards them, seeking their comfort and presence. Cancer is the archetype of the mother, the nurturer, who gives unselfishly to anyone who needs you, sometimes at the cost of themselves. They are sensitive to their surroundings and makes others feel seen, understood and acknowledged in their presence. Cancer’s will go to the ends of the earth to help someone they love. They could also have a real blind spot when it comes to seeing the red flags in those they love.

To the crab, their sense of home is incredibly important to their feeling of safety. They find it hard to achieve anything unless they feel safe and comfortable in their home lives. With a deep need for security and stability, cancer is the sign of home and family life. However, more than any other sign, cancer is a series of contradictions. They prize security above all else, yet love new adventures. They are the souls of caution but also a courageous initiator due to their cardinal quality. Cancer, which is ruled by the moon and has water as its element, can be linked to the shifting tides of the oceans, the powerful forces moving under the surface. (This is why cancer’s are naturally drawn to the ocean, as well as the moon.) That surface, however, is quite hard to penetrate, for cancerians tend to build up a wall of defenses to hide their deep feelings and extreme sensitivity.

Cancer have a great need to be approved of, but at the same time resent needing approval so badly. They also expect others to know what they're thinking, which is another source of frustration. Learning to voice opinions, even if it leads to conflict, is a lifelong lesson for cancer. The same goes for learning how to step up for what they believe in.

Their creativity is profound and runs deep in their veins. Cancer’s are artists and creatives, and have strong intellectual talents. Their instinct for business combined with their creativity is magical and can be used to their advantage. Although their sensitivity is so heightened that they sometimes take offense where none was intended, the enormous sensitivity of a cancer can be a great source of strength, if channeled in the right direction. Once they overcome their shyness and touchiness and master their turbulent emotions, their intellect and imagination enable them to become a success in almost anything they undertake. Many cancers are gifted as writers, poets, designers, dancers, musicians and painters and because of their natural curiosity for the unseen, and the pull towards connecting to a higher power, they are drawn towards and may find comfort in religion, spiritual practices and esoteric teachings. They love spirituality. Their soft nature also makes them great with children and the elderly, and with people in general.

Music, as well as others forms of art, play an extremely critical role in the life of a cancer. Whereas others enjoy music, cancer’s feel it.

Cancer easily seduces you with their elusive charm and playfulness. The way they are able to connect with others on a very emotional level, makes cancers kind of irresistible. However, they are also somewhat of a tease, and their struggles with attachment can go both ways; being overly detached but flirty, or attached and needy. At their highest (and most secure) level though, it’s very easy to fall in love with this sensual, empathic, gentle, caring, moon-child.

Being taken advantage of is also a struggle for cancer’s. A cancer tend to carry the world on their shoulders, and because caring for others is such a deep trait in their personality, knowing how to create boundaries is key, and they must learn what is and is not theirs to be responsible for. If they don’t know where to draw the line, their life may have constant episodes of drama and emotional intensity. In this case, they can attract weak, needy, helpless or manipulative people – people in extremes of emotional crisis, in order to learn valuable life lessons. Broken souls are often times in search for the healing qualities a cancer possesses, but that doesn’t mean that it’s their job to take on the baggage of others.

The opposite sign of cancer, is capricorn. While attachments, family and home life are ruled by cancer, achievements, reputation, career and rewards are ruled by capricorn. Both cancer and capricorn are aware that life takes work. Capricorn is all about the type of work that gets rewarded externally. Cancer understands the work of cultivating an intimate caring relationship within the self and outward with others. However, learning both and creating a healthy balance between their home life and their public life, is important, for both cancer and capricorn. The strengths of capricorn are opposite of the strengths of cancer, and so the two signs have a lot to learn from each other.

Proud, dramatic, intense and energetic, leo’s thrive on social interactions and have no problem making friends or being the center of attention. Ruled by the sun, leo’s have a heat, intensity and energy unlike any other sign. They put themselves first, and will turn down a plan that doesn't fit with their agenda or idea of fun. This trait has gained them a reputation for arrogance. Whereas aquarius, leo’s opposite sign, are concerned with larger ideas, humanitarian concepts and the higher aspirations of mankind, leo’s look for what they can get out of life for themselves and are concerned with their own sense of uniqueness. A leo can learn a lot from its opposite, aquarius, and how their concern is with what the group wants as opposed to our individual needs. However, leo’s have a stronger personal approach to relationships than aquarius, and values strong bonds and deep connections whereas an aqarius can seem aloof and impersonal in these circumstances.

While others wait in the shadows, leo shine in the spotlight. Whatever they do, they do it with a dramatic sense - everything about them is theatrical. Outward appearances matter to this sign and leo’s love attention and expect praise, appreciation and admiration. However, because they are too proud to ask for this, they often suffer silently from a wounded ego. Their hidden secret is their need to be needed.

The unevolved leo makes absolutely everything about them and will not accept if anyone else is getting attention. Jealous and even aggresive, they need constant external validation and thinks that the world revolves around them. The evolved leo, on the other hand, is genuine and confident and inspires everyone with their warmth. An evolved leo still love the spotlight, but they aren’t afraid to share it. Whereas the unevolved leo seek attention and approval from everything and everyone, an evolved leo have found that within themselves. A leo is here in this lifetime to have (and broadcast) confidence, but not at the expense of everyone else. It’s important that a leo develop a healthy sense of self-esteem and security, so that their need for external approval, or their ‘the world only revolves around me’ attitude, (which only is a compensation for their lack of self-esteem) don’t run their lives. One of the soul promises in this lifetime, as a leo, is to stand in the spotlight - for the right reasons, and be safe there.

Leo’s are witty, enthusiastic, powerful, expansive, creative and extravagant. They are fluent talkers and a born entertainer who can lend spice to any occasion. Their energy is electric and they tend to cause drama with their flamboyant nature. Leo’s are a great host, and people love being around them. Nothing is too good for a leo, luxury is vital, and they want to enjoy the good life, and never mind what it costs. Their immediate reaction to any problem is to do something about it, rather than sit around waiting. If someone needs a hand, they are the first one to reach out. They have a way of standing out in a crowd; with their sense of style, gestures and way of behaving. It’s difficult (though not impossible) to dislike a leo, although they can be both bombastic and overbearing at times. Despite their self-centered nature, a leo is a great friend, loyal and trustworthy, in which will love you forever. A giving nature, they are generous, kind and openhearted, they forgive easily and usually never holds a grudge. Affectionate and cheerful, leo’s always bring some sunshine into the lives of others. In many ways they are like the sun itself. Leo’s are passionate in all pursuits, including relationships. They love grand gestures, and they want to show the world how attentive and caring they can be. When they love, they love big. And loud.

In business leo’s are in command. Capricorns also gravitates towards authority and power, but whereas capricorn's steady and structured individuals climbs to the top because of their hard work, leo simply assume that they were born into high positions. They are not entirely wrong, though. However, leo’s can also work hard, and won’t run from a challenge or confrontation. They are ambitious, but not ruthless.

Lions are well known for their loud roar, but learning to quiet down and listen is essential for leo to reach their power. And while this sign thrives on their split-second decision-making and reaction skills, they might sometimes benefit from taking a moment before making their opinion known on a subject.

Even though leo are the definition of a fiery, fire sign, they can be, like their symbol, the lion, quite lazy at times. But their warmth and sunny presence is very hard to resist. The world would be much less fun without leo’s. Everything about a leo is big; big laughs, big fire, big passion, big egos, big hair, big hearts.

Smart, sophisticated and kind, virgo gets the job done without complaining. Practical, analytical, organized, structured and clean are virgo’s middle names. It’s the sign of work and being of service. They are highly intellectual and good at big picture thinking. Planning out their life, their vacations, and what they're going to do today (they love making lists) makes them feel in control and secure.

The real drama of virgo’s personality is going on inside. To the world they may give an impression of being calm and centered, but inside they may feel highly anxious, nervous and restless with a controlled intensity and desire to be doing better, improving and re-arranging. They can exhaust themselves more by simply sitting still than other signs do by moving around. They never give themselves a break and are critical by nature, of both themselves and others.

Virgo have incredibly high standards, which can bring a lot of pain to others, but not to mention on to themselves. They expect perfection from themselves, and they may project those high standards on the other people in their life. They tend to be unsatisfied with things as they are and continue to analyze situations and people in the hope of finding a way to make them better. Virgo's desire to have everything be perfect can manifest in frustration when things don't live up to those (sometimes unrealistic) expectations. Self-punishment is a virgo fault.

Mercury, the planet of thought processes and communication, rules both gemini and virgo, speaking to the constant mental activity these signs experience. However, in gemini the energy is directed primarily toward stimulation and adventure, while in virgo the ceaseless drive is to accomplish and perfect. It’s impossible for virgo’s to put off until tomorrow what might be done today, or do later what might be done now. Their idea of taking it easy would seem like hard work to most people. They are not dreamers, like their opposite sign pisces, they are doers.

The astrological symbol of the virgin tends to be misunderstood. It does not mean they are prude or lack sensuality (even though they are far from the most sexual sign). The virgin stands for purity and purpose. They have high and clear motives, and they want to be of use. Their emotional life is a constant strive to bring order out of chaos and confusion. Although they have a great capacity for love, love alone is not enough for them to be happy. They’re ambitious, but not just for the money. They want to know more, to gain wisdom, and put this wisdom to practical use. Learning to go with the flow and accept that ‘it’s good enough’ is a constant struggle. Virgo is incredibly hard working. Virgo work hard, and that work ethic inspires everyone in their life.
