Adaptogens

They’re called adaptogens because of their unique ability to “adapt” their function according to your body’s specific needs.

Adaptogens are a unique group of herbs, mushrooms and roots. They're used to protect the body from the toxic effects of stress, which is the biggest health issue of our time, by improving the health of your adrenal system, the system that’s in charge of managing your body’s hormonal response to stress. Adaptogens also strengthen your immune function and your nervous system, and some also works as a detoxifier and liver supporter.

Adaptare in Latin actually means to adjust, which is exactly what adaptogens help your body do, as they don’t treat a specific condition, instead, they’re for anyone looking to boost overall well-being and help bring the body back to homeostasis, back to balance. The charm of adaptogens is that they work with your needs specifically, adapting their function to your body’s needs, meaning nobody would respond the same way as some people would need more energy, while others may need calming properties. Adaptogens work a bit like a thermostat. When the thermostat senses that the room temperature is too high it brings it down; when the temperature is too low it brings it up.

Adaptogens are powerful, but slow-acting and the effects may initially be subtle, so it can take time to notice a difference. They come in lots of different forms, including pills that resemble vitamins, tinctures, powders and teas. Some of my favorites are maca, ashwagandha, reishi, chaga, licorice, milk thistle, rhodiola rosea and turmeric which also has adaptogenic properties.
